Reiki Attunements need to be done in-person to be effective

In light of the circumstances we all find ourselves in I am seeing an increase of Reiki Teachers offering Reiki Online. I have gotten a few inquiries around this myself so just wanted to speak to this. What other teachers do is their business so this is no way a judgement or attack, but simply put in the way I have been taught and in the traditional Usui lineage that I carry Reiki Attunements can’t be done online. I won’t be teaching Reiki Online over this time because of this reason. You also won’t see my teacher Martine teaching or any other teachers I have trained or anyone of our lineage doing this. Actual Reiki healings can be done via a distance, no problems. Reiki Meditations, yes. Reiki Attunements – no.

Learning Reiki is not just about an intellectual understanding and education about how it works and where to place your hands, etc. It’s a Spiritual Initiation. Reiki Training involves an Attunement Ceremony that activates and expands your light body. For this to actually integrate properly it must be done in-person. It needs a foundation of all of the elements weaving in the space. Online it lacks the Earth Element. For the earth element integration you need physical bodies, physical touch in the same space for the spirit work transmission to happen + for the kundalini awakening to take place.

Further to this, especially for those based in Australia who want to professionally practice. The ARC Reiki Association that I am a member of and accredited by will not recognise practitioners who have been attuned online. Which means, you won’t get insurance or the backing of an association when it comes time to professionally see clients. Reiki is on its way to going mainstream, and for that to happen there needs to be a greater consideration and respect to the foundations. If you want to hire a clinic room, work in a hospital or offer Reiki anywhere publicly you are going to need insurance. I can actually envision government restrictions and reinforcement around this will only get stronger + tighter the more mainstream Reiki becomes.

I am constantly having students come and re-do their training and asking me to fix and re-attune them after they have studied online or practiced with teachers that haven’t attuned them properly. Almost always this is because they have received attunements online or via distance. I can tell when someone has been properly attuned in-person vs those that have gotten online attunements, and often when they feel the difference the first thing they will say to me is “wow, I actually felt a big difference”. This isn’t to say that they didn’t notice any effects with distant attunements as of course there will be some shifts. It just won’t fully integrate.

Sorry to be a party pooper. I would love nothing more than be able to continue teaching Reiki over this time. However I also know and trust that these teachings and attunements always happen in perfect sacred timing and then that timing always makes sense after the fact. So if you are curious and drawn to study Reiki, please do your research. Be patient, the lock down won’t be forever. Teachers, this is a chance to innovate, while attunements aren’t effective online there are actually infinite other possibilities of sharing Reiki, meditation + energy healing practices online. I know for me I am BURSTING with ideas at the moment that the Reiki Spirits keep filling me with.
